“So it’s, honestly and truly, a show about nothing?” I ask, staring at the TV.

“Pretty much, yeah,” James replies

“And this was on for how long?”

“Nine seasons.”

“Man, things were different when you were a kid,” I say. “What did you play with, rocks and sticks?”

He pokes me in the side, making me giggle. We’ve progressively moved closer to one another on the couch throughout dinner. “I’ll have you know I played with only the most interesting rocks and sticks. I had my standards.”

“I’m not so sure, after watching this show.”

“Brat,” he says, but he’s laughing. “Just you wait until you hit thirty. It’ll happen sooner than you think.”

“I’m surprised you remember back that far. They say the memory is the first thing to go.”

“That’s it,” he says, lunging towards me. “You’re getting tickled until you can’t breathe.”

“Not if I tickle you first!” I say, moving to straddle his lap and get the upper hand. We play-wrestle for dominance for a minute, but then he stops and looks into my eyes.

He’s pulling me close, and I’m not sure which one of us initiates the kiss. We’re both breathless from the tickling, but that doesn’t keep us from exploring each other’s mouths, kissing deeply. James puts his hands on my hips and encourages me to grind down against him. His hard cock grinds against me and I whimper.

“God, that’s it, Helene,” he says.

His hand tangles in my hair, keeping me close as we kiss each other desperately. I continue to grind against him, and now we’re breathless for an entirely different reason.

James finally breaks the kiss, holding me gently by the shoulders as he pushes me away from him. “We have to stop.”

I freeze.

“I didn’t mean it that literally, Helene,” he chuckles, kissing the tip of my nose. “And it’s not that I don’t want to. But we literally met one another today. I don’t want to do anything that you’ll regret.”

“Oh,” I say in a soft voice.

“No, it’s not like that,” he says. “Sweetheart, I want you more than anything. But I feel like maybe we should go out on a real date first. I want to make you feel special. Cherished.”

I bite my lip to keep from telling him I felt pretty damn special when we were making out. He’s either a stand-up guy who’s looking out for my best interest, or he’s already regretting what we did. Based on everything I know of him, I should assume the former. But I’ve had enough experiences over the years that I can’t entirely discount the idea of the latter.

“I should be going,” I say, awkwardly climbing off his lap.

He catches my hand. “I didn’t intend to upset you.”

“No, you didn’t!” I say a bit more forcefully than I intend. “But it’s getting late, and I have schoolwork I need to get done.”

“When can I see you again? Tomorrow?”

Tonight has been a bit of an emotional roller-coaster. One minute, he’s taking pictures for my online dating profile; the next, he’s kissing me silly. I don’t know what to think.
